Dividend Income Goal Calculator

Set a yearly or monthly dividend income goal and see the portfolio size it takes at a given yield, plus how long it could take with monthly contributions, price growth, and dividend reinvestment.

Ad · 728×90 placeholder

How to use

  1. Enter the income you want and whether it is per month or per year.
  2. Enter your expected portfolio dividend yield and your current balance.
  3. Add monthly contributions and expected price growth. Check DRIP if dividends are reinvested until you reach the goal.

Formulas explained

Portfolio needed = annual income goal / dividend yield Monthly step: P = P × (1+g)^(1/12) + contribution + (DRIP ? P × yield/12 : 0) Goal reached when P × yield ≥ annual goal

Worked example Hypothetical

Hypothetical: a goal of $1,000/month = $12,000/yr at a 3.5% yield needs about $342,857. Starting from $25,000, adding $750/month, with 4% price growth and DRIP, the calculator estimates about 15.7 years.

FAQ

Is a higher yield better?

A very high yield can signal dividend-cut risk or a falling price. Yield is only one factor.

Are dividends taxed?

Usually yes. Qualified dividends get long-term capital gains rates, while others are taxed as ordinary income. This calculator ignores taxes.

Does yield stay constant?

The model assumes a constant yield, so dividends grow at the same rate as the price. Real dividend growth varies.

Dividend income goal calculator explained for beginners

What this tool does

It estimates how big a portfolio you would need to reach a target dividend income, and roughly how long it might take with regular contributions.

What each input means
Income goal
The dividend income you want.
Goal period
Whether that goal is per month or per year.
Portfolio dividend yield
The average yield you expect your holdings to pay.
Current portfolio
What you have invested now.
Monthly contribution
How much you add each month.
Price growth
Assumed yearly growth in share prices.
How to read the results

Portfolio needed is your yearly goal divided by the yield. Time to goal is how long the projection takes to get there with your contributions and growth assumptions.

A short worked example (hypothetical)

$1,000 a month is $12,000 a year. At a 4% yield you would need $12,000 ÷ 0.04 = $300,000.
